Be Still

A Time for Silence

Read Deuteronomy 27:1 through 30:20

Ruth regularly reminded her two sons to take “quiet time.” Her sons never wanted that time of silence and rest. They didn’t realize the importance of their mom’s advice. Sometimes they tried to debate with her. Ruth refused to waver though, and both sons developed this habit of “quiet time.”

Moses and the priests, who are Levites, said to all Israel, “Be silent, O Israel, and listen! You have now become the people of the LORD your God” (Deuteronomy 27:9).

The Israelites were reminded to keep the commands God had given them, to write the Law in stone as they crossed into the land of Promise, to build an altar, and to be silent. God instructed Moses and the priests to give the blessings and curses which the Israelites were to recite.

To hear from their God, they needed to listen.

Isn’t today a good day to pursue some quiet time? The time of silence can help us remember the instructions God has given.

Challenge for Today: Prayer is often when we speak to God. Choose today to let your prayer include listening to God’s Word.
