Sing for His Glory vs. Your Own (Korah's Chorus)

Korah’s Chorus

Read Psalms 46:1 through 49:20; Acts 18:1–28

Korah, a Levite, led a rebellion against Moses (Numbers 16). God judged Korah and his 250 followers, and the earth swallowed them. His sons, however, must have remained faithful to the Lord. Over 400 years later, King David appointed Levites from Korah’s line to serve in the temple as choir directors and musicians. They continued in this role for centuries, through good kings and bad. Psalms 42 to 49 probably came from the songs they composed for use in worshipping the Lord. Perhaps they reflected on the life of their ancestor, Korah, when they sang these words:

No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him—the ransom for a life is costly no payment is ever enough (Psalm 49:7,8).

Each person will be held accountable for his own deeds. Don’t be like Korah and seek honor for yourself. Instead, be a humble servant like his progeny. They unselfishly performed their duties for the glory of God. A life lived for the Lord will never be wasted.

Challenge for Today: Direct any praise you receive to God.
