Technicalities

Read 2 Chronicles 29:1 through 32:33; John 12:1–19
Shamed by the fallen condition of Israel, King Hezekiah cleaned out the temple and set things right. People streamed into Jerusalem to celebrate, but some had forgotten the int...ricate rules of how things were to be done around the temple. Still, Hezekiah knew the Lord well enough to pray:
May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone who sets his heart on seeking God—the Lord, the God of his fathers—even if he is not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary (2 Chronicles 30:18,19).
The Israelites structured their society around God’s law, but He repeatedly made it clear that He was not about rules. God is all about the heart. Even though some deviated from the religious traditions, they loved God, and sought after Him.
Yes, there is right and wrong. We should not justify true sin because someone “has a good heart,” but we must never let man-made rules usurp our primary mission: to love God and to love His people. God doesn’t reject people on technicalities.
Challenge for Today: Ask God to give you a soul-to-soul perspective on someone with whom you don’t see eye-to-eye.
Quicklook: 2 Chronicles 30:15–19
