Listen
Read 1 Samuel 1:1 through 7:17
The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1Samuel3:10).
We read stories about young Samuel and marvel at how he missed the voice of God, yet at the same time we wonder why God seems so silent in our own lives. Scoffers and even some believers can find themselves wondering if our Creator has left us to our own devices.
But, just as the old priest Eli told Samuel, God does want to speak to us. Even today He desperately calls to us, His servants. He calls to us to calm our spirits and listen. We may not audibly hear His voice, but He communicates to us in many different ways. He speaks through the voice of discerning believers. He speaks as His Holy Spirit guides our steps. Most importantly, He speaks through His Word—histories and poetry and wisdom and prophecy—written over thousands of years and passed down to us in a form we can easily access and study. Meditate on the Word He has given you, and listen to His voice.
Thought for Today: Understanding a scriptural truth is like getting a brief glimpse into the mind of God.
