Praise of the Day (Intercession)

Intercession

Read Psalms 15:1 through 17:15; Acts 12:1–25

The gospel has brought many people much joy, but it has not been shared without sacrifice. In Acts, Stephen was stoned, and James was killed with the sword on orders from Herod. Some early Christians were devoured by lions as entertainment in Rome’s arena. Later, in the sixteenth century, William Tyndale was burned at the stake after translating the Bible into English. In the twentieth century, Watchman Nee was arrested in China for his faith and died in prison. More recently, a group of Christians offering medical services in Afghanistan were shot. Martyrdom continues today as thousands risk their lives to proclaim the gospel. The Church can respond as it did when Peter was in prison for sharing his faith.

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him (Acts 12:5).

Since James had just been killed by Herod, it is likely Herod would have also killed Peter. But an angel released Peter from his chains and opened the iron gates so Peter was free. It is no coincidence the Church was interceding for him at that time.

Prayer for Today: Lord, protect and encourage those persecuted for their faith in You.
